Heratbreaking! I know there is nothing can be said to help you feel better but just as you said "I did absolutely everything I could to save OUR mariage and keep OUR family together" please find comfort in those words. It is a shame that this was not his mindset and upon reflection he will realize that this statement cannot be uttered from his lips! Sorry is not enough...
He can walk away because in his mind his own petty, selfish needs are obviously more important than the welfare of his kids. Nice to know that he is looking out for their best interests...
