I was reading on Birding BC that a flock of Snowy Owls was hanging out at Boundary Bay in Delta right now. So I thought I would take Sacha and check them out. I haven’t seen too many owls in the wild before. Just a Great Horned Owl and a Barred Owl, and probably a Barn Owl too, but not since I’ve been keeping my list.
My photos aren’t great, because I had put my better camera in the diaper bag and that was with Mum, who is looking after Alice this week until her spot in daycare opens up next week.
Sacha was very excited to see the owls but was saying that we can’t see owls in the day time, because they only come out at night. I told him that perhaps they would be sleeping, but that we could hopefully still see them. He wanted to yell out “1, 2, 3 … wake up owls!!!”. Just like “Wake up Jeff” from the Wiggles. We had a pep talk in the car about how if we did see the owls, that we had to give them space and not be loud and scare them.
So we got out of the car, Sacha got to carry the binoculars and went to go look for the owls. It took about 30 seconds to see where they were, about 500m down the path, which was filled with about 30 people, with huge lenses taking pics of the owls in the good light just before sunset. It was right out of a scene from “The Big Year”. I didn’t do an official count, but we saw about 15 of them. I think.
